BG Tech, the world leader in the manufacturing of radar/laser detectors (RLD), has added the eDmod100 eDevice module for direct Internet connectivity to a GPS/RLD unit called Snooper S6. This marks one of the first mass consumer products to embed PC-less Internet connectivity, enabling the end-user to update evolving database information over the Internet by simply plugging the unit directly into a phone line. BG Tech wanted a system that could not only alert the driver to the presence of radar, but could also offer advanced warning before the driver enters an area known for fixed or frequently activated speed traps, often found where accidents are common such like black spots, school zone, potentially dangerous and hazardous zone. “Using the eDevice off-the-shelf Internet connectivity module, our designers were able to rapidly retrofit the modem and requisite Internet software into an existing radar/GPS unit, enabling us to offer our customer a product with the solution they needed, significantly increasing its value and functionality,” says JW Choi, Product Manager of BG Tech. The Snooper S6 is the worlds’ first unit to integrate an RLD, a GPS system, and an evolving database of the geographical coordinates of “fixed” speed monitoring systems and officially designated accident “hotspots” and safe driving. To keep the database up-to-date, the user simply plugs the unit periodically into any phone line. The unit automatically and transparently dials and downloads the new database over the Internet in a matter of minutes. The embedded eDmod100 M2M module from eDevice manages the Internet connection and the FTP transfer; BG Tech engineers simply embedded the module on the board of an existing product, and programmed the basic modem parameters. | BGTech
